With a rich history that goes back decades, Rwanda people spend each day in respect of their rich culture a thing which the elders pass on to every generation that comes with a main emphasis on humankind value. Among the eight Rwanda Genocide sites only four scored big in UNESCO starting with the main memorial in Kigali, Ntarama, Murambi and Bisesero. All the sites embrace the sad days of the 1994 Rwanda an incident which claimed over 1,000,000 people due to Ethnic background and political affiliation. Not only the United Nation Education Scientific and cultural organization saw it fit but also most visitors and tourists find it worthy upon arrival and always give it the first priority either at the beginning or the end of their stay. Even local citizens visit memorials as a way of remembering their brothers and sisters who were victims of the incident.
Murambi Memorial site: The most exceptional Genocide site in Rwanda with displays of whole bodies, half rotten and others dried by lime making bodies look white. It’s a good place for people who are brave and strong because cowards can’t stand it for even a second. Sometimes people call it the most unforgettable horrors of the genocide fit for dark tourism. Visitors to the memorial are welcomed by the museum information and films, followed by a show case of some glass tombs with remains of the victims, preserved bodies and corpse’s waits welcome you including children, women and men laid in angles of how they were killed. Still the site has a room for only babies and children a room which can make you cry and feel broken looking at the innocent souls who even couldn’t fight for themselves. The baby body’s positions explain the massive struggle and battles they went through before death.
Kigali Memorial Centre: A great site in Kigali Rwanda’s Capital and the most visited since 2004 when it opened. The site caters for burial grounds, Gardens, the wall of listed names and the indoor museum. The museum exhibits make you feel sorry & sad to the extent that some guests cry having looked at the massacre event, video clips and other photography. The museum guide can take you around giving you oral explanations including the history of the genocide event. The main language used is English, French and Kinyarwanda. Some moments become heavy for eyes that instead of being sorrowful, you become more emotional. Entrance is free so you don’t have to miss it when you around Kigali. You can keep the memories of your visit by taking a photo outside the genocide for free or inside for a fee of only $20 Adults, $10 students plus residents while $100 for professionals. Visitors are allowed into the memorial from 8am-5 pm with a last guest entering at 4pm. However the recommended time to explore the genocide is only one hour and half but you free to spend extra 2hours around and memorize the exhibitions.
Ntarama Genocide site: Here is a house of God which turned out to be a grave for over 5000 people who were killed in the process of seeking safety in God’s house. Human Remains, Clothing, artifacts welcome you in Nyamata memorial site since remains are on display all the time. In truth, it is easy to visit a genocide site but hard to cope up with the site displays which is quite moving and touch looking at the impacts of hustles and battles of the tribes and political affiliates. Visitors can reach Ntarama by road and still no entrance fee is paid at any point except if you chose to donate a dollar for the site maintenance. Unlike the previous the genocide sites, which took place in different corners due to the Tutsis effort to save life, Ntarama is too shocking that such scenarios happened in the calm church parish. Besides you can also visit Nyamata genocide memorial since they are located close to each other. It’s very sad but beautiful and worthy visiting.
