There are several things to see in Nyungwe Forest National Park. From the endangered chimpanzees to several monkey species, there is a lot to see within this forest. Here are the major attractions within the park;
Chimpanzees
Nyungwe forest is a home to the highest chimpanzee population in Rwanda with about 500 chimpanzees. Chimpanzees here live in groups of about 30 and more and are usually on the move over tree branches in the forest looking for food. They are herbivores that usually feed on bamboo shoots, leaves and wild fruits as well as some small insects. Nyungwe forest national park employs rangers who are well conversant with the forest and usually lead tourists to different parts of the forest as they track chimpanzees.
Birds
Birds are other impressive wildlife species that can be viewed in Nyungwe forest. The forest is a home to over 300 bird species including 27 species that are endemic to the Albertine rift valley region. Some of the sighted bird species include the grey chested Kakamega, African saw-wing, olive pigeon, great blue Turaco, crowned eagle, cape wagtail, blue headed sunbird, mountain wagtail and many others. Tourists interested in birding are very much welcome to track birds in this forest as they stand more chances to view many other wildlife species in the forest.
Nyungwe forest also has a number of mammals like the giant forest squirrel, bush pigs, wild cats, Congo clawless otter and small forest duikers. There are also many amphibians, reptiles and insects in this forest most of which being seen by tourists on forest walks and chimpanzee tracking.
